Maths: Definitions and Formulas -
A prime number is a whole number greater than 1, whose only two whole-number factors are 1 and itself. The first few prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, and 29
A composite number is any integer greater than one that is not a prime number.
A square number is the product of a number multiplied by itself, e.g. 1, 4, 9, 16(1x1=1, 2x2=4 etc).
Fractions
Proper fraction is less than one, with the numerator less than the denominator eg. 7/8, 2/9 etc
Improper fraction is a fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator, such as 5/4.
Mixed number a number consisting of a whole positive number (integer) and a proper fraction, eg 7 1/2, 93/5
To simplify a fraction or cancel it down, divide the top and bottom by the same number eg. 8/12 = ¾
Addition: Get LCD, eg 2/3 + 3/5 = 10/15 + 9/15 = 19/15 = 1 4/15
Subtraction: Get LCD, and subtract, eg. 4/5 – 2/3 = 12/15 – 10/15 = 2/15
Multiplication: Multiply numerator by numerator and denominator by denominator eg, 2/3 x 1/5 = 2/15
